Beach Sand Three friends were walking along a beach in California. They looked closely at the sand and noticed it was made of tiny particles of rock. They had different ideas where it came from. Molly: “I think the sand came from the distant mountains and landforms. Frank: “I think the sand came from rocks on the ocean floor.” Lynn: “ I think the sand came from undersea mountains and sea floor formations. Which friend do you agree with and why? Explain your thinking about how the sand formed and ended up on the beach.

What is sand?

What is a rock? A solid material forming part of the surface of the earth and other similar planets that is made up of a group of minerals. It can be exposed on the surface or underlying the soil or oceans.

Carefully review their vocab charts and fill out the checklist. Return charts and checklist to owner. Make revisions to your charts if needed. Turn in checklist. Tape charts into your spiral notebook.
