Vibrational Spectroscopy of Liquid Carbon Probed by Chirped Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (c-CARS) Paul Peng, Saykally Group, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720 Ultrafast laser nonthermal-melting of solids (below right) is a means to access the properties of liquid carbon without resorting to extremely high temperatures or pressures. In turn, the vibrational features of liquid carbon can be determined by chirped-CARS, a four-wave-mixing, multiplex technique (right). Chirped-CARS is a sensitive technique for detection of trace gases (right) in the atmosphere as well as a variety of liquid samples. Liquid carbon experiments will represent the first extension of this technique to nonthermally-melted materials.
