Chapter 11.1 Equations and Solutions
Vocabulary: equation, solution
2
An equation is a mathematical statement that two expressions are equal.
An equation may or may not contain variables. For an equation that has a variable, a solution of the equation is a value of the variable that makes the equation true. n+ 4 (expression) n + 4 = 9 (equation) What makes this equation true? The one solution is n = 5.
3
Is the given value a solution? (Does it make the equation true?)
x + 9 = 15 ; x = 6 (6) + 9 = 15 Yes. y/4 = 32 ; y = 8 (8)/4 = 32 No.
4
Is the given value a solution? (Does it make the equation true?)
x/9 = 4 ; x = 36 11 = n + 6 ; n = 5 y – 6 = 24; y = 18 15t = 100 ; t = 6

Is x = 7 a solution to the equation?
Review from yesterday... Is x = 7 a solution to the equation? X + 7 = 14
7
Writing Equations – We need the equal sign!
Seven less than a number equals ten N – 7 = 10 Is Three times a number is negative six 3 * n = -6 Is the Same Eight is the same as twice a number 8 = 2n Total Four minus three totals one 4 – 3 = 1 Yields Twelve added to twelve yields 24 = 24
9
1. The sum of 17 and p is 46. 2 Three divided by a number totals 1. 3 The quotient of 12 and 4 is the same as the sum of x and 5.

With any equation, our goal is to ISOLATE the variable
With any equation, our goal is to ISOLATE the variable. To do this, we use inverse operations to keep the equation balanced. a + 15 = 26 -15 -15 a = 11
18
Examples 1.) Y – 21 = 18 2.) 2 = x - 3 3.) s = 14 4.) 82 + p = 122 5.) n + ½ = 7/4
