1 What can you do to solve a really tricky word problem?
For example:

2 LearnZillion Notes: --This is our lesson objective. Keep it as short and student-friendly as possible. Put what they will learn in green and then how they’ll learn it in blue. For example, “In this lesson you will learn how to compare fractions with different denominators by using a number line.”

3 Altogether the bags of spinach weigh____ ounces.
Model drawing is a strategy that helps you understand the word problem that you are solving. This method is more organization of your thoughts around the word problem. When you use this method you are doing two things– first you are understanding the process of how to use model drawing and second you are applying that process to your understanding of how to solve word problems

4 A common mistake when model drawing is that the unit bars are not drawn to be equal with each other. When they are drawn equal it helps in solving the word problem. It helps in instances where you would be subtracting a set amount or dividing into equal groups. A strategy to use for proper spacing and alignment is to use graph paper which can ensure proper spacing and alignment.

5 Milton needs to read ____ pages to reach his goal.
Milton’s goal is to read his 400 page book over the three day weekend. On Friday he read 134 pages, on Saturday he read 206 pages. How many pages will Milton need to read on Sunday to reach his goal? So the first thing I need to ask myself is what is the question this problem is asking me to solve? In this case they want to know how many pages does Milton have left to reach his goal. So I need to figure out how many pages did he already read in order to figure out how many pages are left to reach his goal.

6 So the problem told me that the book has 400 pages total
So the problem told me that the book has 400 pages total. So I will represent the total amount of pages with this long bar. Now the problem gave me more information that I can use to answer this question. On Friday, Milton read 134 pages, and Saturday he read 206 pages. When we create our bars we need to make it reflect as much as possible the actual numbers so 206 is a larger bar than 134. What we don’t know is how many pages are left to reach Milton’s 400 page goal. So to show that I don’t know what that answer is as yet I am going to put a ?

7 Milton needs to read __ pages to reach his goal.
When solving problems with model drawing it helps to have a page where you can complete your computation. So, what I will do is add up the pages that were already read so = 340. So Milton read 340 pages. How many more pages does Milton need to read to reach his goal. I know there are 400 pages and he read 340 pages already so I am going to subtract 400 – 340 to get a difference of 60 pages. Milton needs to read 60 pages to reach his goal.

8 LearnZillion Notes: --This is the lesson conclusion. On this slide you’ll change your original lesson objective to past tense and explain what the student has just learned. You can retype it here or you can delete the text on this slide and then just copy and paste the text box from the original Lesson Objective slide and then edit it to make it past tense!

9 LearnZillion Notes: --The “Guided Practice” should include 1 practice problem that targets the skill that was used in the Core Lesson. Use the same vocabulary and process you used in the original lesson to solve this problem. You’ll be making a video in which you solve this question using your tablet and pen, so all you need to do is write the question on this slide.

10 There are __ trucks in the stadium parking lot.
= 349 478 – 349= 129 There are __ trucks in the stadium parking lot.

11 LearnZillion Notes: --On the Extension Activities slide(s) you should describe 2-3 activities written with students as the audience (not teachers). Each extension activity should push the students a bit further with the lesson but in a different application or context. Each activity should be designed to take roughly minutes. Teachers will likely display the slide in class and then assign an activity to a student or group for additional practice and differentiation. Ideally, these Extension Activities will be created such that a teacher can differentiate instruction by giving more difficult extension activities to students who have shown mastery of the lesson, and less difficult activities to students who are not yet proficient. --If you need more than one slide to list your extension activities, feel free to copy and paste this slide!

12 Create a multi-step word problem where you will add and subtract in order to determine the answer. Use the following numbers: 2,345, 98, and 541. -or determine your own numbers - must be two digit - four digit numbers LearnZillion Notes: --On the Extension Activities slide(s) you should describe 2-3 activities written with students as the audience (not teachers). 14 LearnZillion Notes: --”Quick Quiz” is an easy way to check for student understanding at the end of a lesson. On this slide, you’ll simply display 2 problems that are similar to the previous examples. That’s it! You won’t be recording a video of this slide and when teachers download the slides, they’ll direct their students through the example on their own so you don’t need to show an answer to the question.
