Upwelling and the Ekman Spiral
Wind driven surface ocean currents move at 45° to the left of the wind in the South Hemisphere. With depth the current continues turning left and decreasing in speed. The net flow of water is 90° to the left of the wind. When winds parallel the coast, as against South America, colder water from the depths is forced to rise. This is called upwelling.
