Discovery 104-A Discovering God’s Spirit--”His Person” Prepared by Dennis Henderson, D. Min.
INTRODUCTION: Today we begin a study of the Holy Spirit that includes: (1) Who He is and (2) What He does! I. The Holy Spirit is a Person -- This is demonstrated by the fact that:: 1--He possesses characteristics of personality: Intellect (1 Corinthians 2:10-11) Emotion (Ephesians 4:30) Will (1 Corinthians 12:11) 2--He does what only a person ca do: He created (Genesis 1:2) He teaches (John 14:26) He testifiies (John 15:26) He convinces (John 16:7-8) He intercedes (Romans 8:26) 3--He is treated as a person He is blasphemed (Matthew 12:31) He is lied to (Acts 5:3,90 He is resisted (acts 7:51) He is grieved (Ephesians 4:30) 4--He is referred to by personal pronouns “He” & “Who” instead of “it “ and “what.”
7
Most interesting because the Greek word “Spirit” pneuma is neuter and would require a neuter pronoun “it.” But in John 15:26 the masculine “he” is used for Him and in John 16:7 the masculine “who” is used! (Likewise in Eph 1:14). The Point is The Holy Spirit is a person (not a force or energy but a person who thinks, feels, and makes choices)! Therefore, He is personally involved in our lives and we grieve Him when we sin! II. The Holy Spirit is God 1--He is identified as God (Acts 5:3,4) “you have lied to the Holy Spirit …. What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God.” 2--He possesses divine attributes: Eternality (Hebrews 9:14) Omniscience (1Cor 2:10-22) Omnipresence (Psalm 137:7) Holiness (Luke 11:13) Truth (1 John 5:6) Life-giver (Romans 8:2) 3--He bears the titles of deity. He is called the Spirit of: God (Genesis 1:2) Lord (Luke 4:18) Christ (Romans 8:9) Jehovah (Judges 3:10) Living God (2 Corinthians 3:3)
8
4--He performs works which only God can do:
Creation (Genesis 1:2) New birth (John 3:6) Revelation (1 Peter 1:12) Superintendence (2 Peter 1:21) III. Symbols of the Holy Spirit 1--Clothing Luke 24:49 Symbol of “putting on the power of God” at Pentecost! “I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” Luke 24:49 2--Deposit 2 Corinthians 1:22 Symbol of “the pledge that more of the Father’s promise will come .” 21 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, 22 set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. 2 Cor 1:22 3--Dove Matthew 3:16 Symbol of “gently, and peacefully coming from heaven.” “As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him.” Matthew 3:16 4--Fire Symbol “of the Lord’s presence.”

“They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” Acts 2:3 5--Anointing Oil Acts 10:38 Symbol of “setting apart for service” “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.” Acts 10:38 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth…. 27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit …. 1 John 2:20,27 6--Seal 2 Corinthians 1:22 Symbol of “ownership, authority, security, and finished transaction!” 21 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, 22 set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. 7--Water John 7:37-39 Symbol of the “genuine and total satisfaction of mankind’s basic needs!” 38 “Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. 8--Wind John 3:8
10
Symbol of His “invisible, immaterial, and sovereign nature!”
“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” IV. Focus of His Ministry The Ministry of the Holy Spirit exalts Jesus--not Himself. John 15:26 “the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.” John 16:13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes ... He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.
