7 History… is messy…

8 How do historians organize and make sense of historical data?

9 Using Chronology History is grounded in chronology - events and trends are arranged into logical sequences to identify patterns of change and continuity Continuity – things that stay the same over time Change – things that evolve over time Historical events happen at a specific time and location, and reflect the history, culture, and geography of the time and place in which they occur. Although each society is unique, certain trends and ideas recur across time and space. In addition, understanding the order of events is crucial if one is to understand the importance and meaning of those events.

10 Patterns… More than just putting events in order…
Means understanding why and how one event may or may not lead to subsequent events (consequences!)

11 Where we’re headed… We’ll be using chronology to shape our understanding of the emergence of the modern world.

12 Look for patterns of change and continuity throughout this unit of study!!!
What has stayed the same over time, what has changed, and what are the lasting impacts of ideas and trends of this era?
