4. Course Descriptions – 10th Grade
ENGLISH YEAR/ 1.0 credit
In this class, students will study American Literature and how it has been impacted by United States history. Reading a variety of works including plays, short stories, poems, essays, primary source documents, etc. will help make history and its literature come alive for the student. Students will have the opportunity to write poems, fictional works, and essays. In addition, students will prepare for the Smarter Balance Test and will complete a career studies curriculum in this year-long course.

5. Course Descriptions – 11th Grade
ENGLISH 11 ESSENTIALS YEAR/1.0 credit
English 11 is a class that will help students who struggled in English 10 or who have not yet met the state testing requirements. It will focus on non-fiction reading, research-based essay writing, and vocabulary development. NoRedInk will be an integral part of the class to prepare students for the test or upper-level English classes.
ENGLISH YEAR/1.0 credit
This course will focus on literature and composition through the exploration of topics based on student interest such as film analysis, short stories, literature in lyrics, etc. Students will focus on refining analytical skills in reading and writing as well as continuing to develop skills in vocabulary, grammar, communication, presentation and research skills.
ENGLISH 11 HONORS (College in the HS) YEAR/1.8 credit
EWU English 101 (1.0 credit): College Composition: Exposition and Argumentation. This course provides opportunities for students to develop and enhance their written communication skills. Stresses the organization, development and support of ideas and perspective in exposition and argumentation as public discourse, familiarization with library resources and application of the rules and conventions of standard American English. Students have the opportunity to earn 5 college credits from EWU.
CWU Theatre 107 (0.8 credit): This course will be Introduction to Theater which can be used as either an English credit or an Arts credit (it will count as a Fine Arts credit for colleges). Though it is a Theater Class, it is not a performance-based class. It is an overview of the basic elements of the theater arts dramatic structure, and the environment for production of plays. Students have the opportunity to earn 4 college credits from CWU.

6. Course Descriptions – 12th Grade
ENGLISH 12 ESSENTIALS YEAR/ 1.0 credit
This course will help students who have struggled in English or who have not yet met the state testing requirements. It will focus on Latino writers and their works including: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, novels, and documentaries. Students will have the opportunity to improve their reading and writing skills through daily practice.
ENGLISH YEAR/ 1.0 credit
This course will combine an intensive look at Greek Mythology and the famous epics, with an intensive research and presentation study to prepare students for college.
ENGLISH 12 HONORS (College in the HS) YEAR/ 1.8 credits
CWU English 102 (.8 credit): Reasoning and Research- (Prerequisite: English 101 with a C- or better). In English 102, you will perceive, create, and/or use criteria to assess the reasonableness, acceptability or quality of source material. You will learn to read for alternate perspectives and relate them to each other in analytical syntheses. You will also practice effective reasoning strategies by identifying them in the writing of others and using them to advance good arguments in position papers. Students have the opportunity to earn 4 college credits from CWU.
CWU English 105 (1.0 credit): The Literary Imagination - (Prerequisite: English 101 for CWU Credit) The purpose of this course is to introduce you to new ways of reading and new kinds of reading pleasure. We will be reading fiction, drama, and poetry in a wide range of styles and from many different historical periods. Much of our class time will be spent on discussion of the works, and not just on what they mean, but how they mean. Students have the opportunity to earn 5 college credits from CWU.
