1
Cells: Building Blocks of Life
1st Quarter
2
A cell that contains a nucleus.
Eukaryotic cell- A cell that contains a nucleus.
3
Two types of eukaryotic cells.
Animal cell Plant cell
4
Prokaryotic- A cell that does not have a nucleus.
6
Cell membrane- the layer through which substances pass in and out of the cell.
7
Cell membrane
8
Cell Wall- The outermost layer of plants cells.
9
Plant cell wall
10
Nucleus – found in eukaryotic cells; contains DNA. The control center for the cell.
11
The job of a nucleus is to be the control center of the cell
The job of a nucleus is to be the control center of the cell. The nucleus in a human cell has forty-six chromosomes. This stores the instruction of the cell's activity. The nucleus is like a vault. It contains the cell's DNA.
14
DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) - Heredity material that controls all the activities of a cell.
16
Chromosomes-directs the activities of a cell and passes on the traits of a cell to new cells.
18
Cytoplasm- fluid surrounding a cell’s organelles.
19
Lysosomes- digests food particles, wastes & foreign invaders.
21
Vacuoles- Stores water and other materials.
22
Mitochondria- breaks down food molecules.
23
Chloroplasts-Makes food using the energy of sunlight
Chloroplasts-Makes food using the energy of sunlight. (This process is called Photosynthesis)
25
Endoplasmic Reticulum- (ER)
packages up proteins for release from the cell.
27
Ribosomes- Makes proteins.
28
Golgi Body Complex- Processes and transports materials out of the cell.
29
Homeostasis Maintaining stable conditions.
Ex: sweating when running so you don’t overheat
30
Diffusion- which molecules of a substance move from areas of higher concentration to areas of lower concentration.
31
Here’s an example.
32
Let’s test this out Let’s perform a few experiments to find out how it works. I have a air freshner that I will spray at the front of the room. The person at the back of the room will tell me when he/she smells the scent.
33
Endocytosis - cell takes in large particles by engulfing them.
35
Exocytosis - cell gets rid of particles, opposite of endocytosis
38
The End.
