3 Why learn about waves? Wave: an oscillation that travels is a wave.
All information you receive in your eyes and ears comes from waves! The light from a traffic light Ripples in a puddle of water Flowing electricity in wires Radio, TV, and cell phone transmissions The electromagnetic Spectrum

4 Recognizing a wave when you see a vibration move (guitar string)
when something makes or responds to sound (drums) makes or responds to light (light bulb) when tech allows us to see through objects (xray) travelling info without wires (satellite)

5 Energy Waves are a form of traveling energy. Waves are present when:
information, energy, or motion is transmitted over a distance without anything obviously moving. They are almost always invisible!

6 Parts of a wave Frequency: a measure of how often goes up and down. Units: sec-1 or Hertz (Hz) Amplitude: how “tall” it is from resting position to the crest or trough (THINK HEIGHT) Wavelength: the distance from one crest to the next. (or one trough to the next) (THINK LENGTH)

Speed: the amount of distance travelled in a certain amount of time. (Ex: mph) For a wave, it is meters per second or m/sec

9 Parts of the equation v = speed (m/sec) f = frequency (sec-1) or (Hz)
lambda = wavelength (m)

10 Example the wavelength for a wave is 0.5 meter, and its frequency is 40 Hz. What is the speed of this wave?
