3 Some information The city is situated in the south of Lithuania on the banks of the river Nemunas. Alytus was granted the Magdeburg rights on 15 June, 1581. It was a fast growing industrial city during the soviet period. At the moment it is still the 6th largest city in Lithuania with the population of

4 The ‘Angel of Freedom’

5 The ’Angel of Freedom’ At first the monument was built in 1929 to commemorate the first decade of Lithuanian independence. It is a very popular place for various meetings to commemorate public holidays. The monument went through several tests of nature and history: in 1934 it was struck and broken by the lightning . Later, in the fifties the Angel of Freedom was pulled down again for political reasons. In 1991 the statue was again restored.

6 City Garden

7 The place for rest City Garden is located in the very center of Alytus. It is famous for its rosary (which was started in the thirties of the last century) and fountain. There are 46 kinds of trees and bushes. Next to the fountain Japanese magnolia bursts into white blossom and delights everyone every spring.

8 The Green Gymnasium The first gymnasium in Alytus was established in 1919. Today it is home to the School of Fine Crafts. The school carries out educational activities and also has a shop of students’ works.

9 Youth park

10 Loved by young and old The Youth Park is located amongst springy brooks and it is distinct from other parks with its metal and plastic sculptures. It attracts people with paths for a walk and sports ground, playgrounds and cycling tracks. The park fits both for cultural events and relaxation.

11 A. Juozapavičius‘ bridge
It‘s the first bridge which connects the first and the second Alytus. At first it was built of wood in 1909 and rebuilt of ferroconcrete in 1937. At that time it was the biggest and most modern bridge in Baltic Republics.

12 White Rose bridge The construction of the new bridge was completed in October 2015. The steel bridge connected the banks of the river Nemunas and bicycle paths on both sides of the river. It is the highest pedestrian and cyclist bridge in Lithuania.

13 The sights seen from the bridge
You can enjoy the spectacular views from the bridge. One of the sights is the old Castlehill which gave the name to the whole city. The chronicies say that a wooden castle stood there in the 14th century.

14 The Sculpture ’Flower’
The first sculpture (by V. Kančiauskas) was created in 1981 to commemorate the 400th Magdeburg rights anniversary of Alytus city. In 2015 after the White Rose bridge was built, the new sculpture was built at the location of the old one.

15 The Museum of Ethnography

16 About the Museum The Museum was founded in 1928 under the initiative of the local intelligentsia. More than 65,000 exhibits are kept there. These historical, ethnographical and archaeological antiques were collected from all the Southern Lithuania districts.

17 Anzelmas Matutis Memorial Museum
One of the most famous children poet A. Matutis Memorial Museum has more than 5000 museum pieces related to his life and work. One can see the writer’s workroom and trophies collected by the poet himself, passionate fisherman and nature lover.
