Background Tri-County Cancer Coalition
Gallatin, Park, & Sweet Grass Counties 2016: MTCC Plan released with tanning objective 2018: Tri-County Cancer Coalition writes 2-year plan with tanning objective The partnership that I am working with for this class is the Tri-County Cancer Coalition, which includes Gallatin, Park, and Sweet Grass Counties. This is a community coalition that involves a variety of local partners working together in order to reduce the impact of cancer by aligning with the statewide Montana Cancer Coalition and encouraging community level collaboration. The 5-year MTCC plan was released in 2016 and included an objective aimed at reduced the proportion of minors using artificial tanning services. The Tri-County Cancer Coalition is working on finishing up their 2-year plan and has included a similar tanning objective as part of their work. Montana Cancer Control Programs. DPHHS.

QN97: Percentage of students who used an indoor tanning device (such as a sunlamp, sunbed, or tanning booth [not including a spray-on tan], one or more times during the 12 months before the survey. Background 2017 Montana Youth Risk Behavior Survey 13.4% (2013) 11.8% (2015) 7.4% (2017) To put this work into context, we looked at the Montana Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Question that asks students about tanning habits. Although the percentage of students using tanning devices has been steadily decreasing over the years, there is still important preventative work to be done. Youth Risk Behavior Survey. OPI.mt.gov.

Purpose Overarching goal will be to use this information in order to influence local policy for City of Bozeman American Cancer Society has provided the Tri-County Cancer Coalition with a model policy/language for effectively doing this No level of UV tanning is safe Educate youth on dangers Prevent harmful UV exposure Reduce the incidence of skin cancer The overarching goal of this project will be to collect information on local tanning establishments and develop a plan for advocating for policy change. The American Cancer Society has provided the Tri-County Cancer Coalition with model language for a local ordinance that would prohibit minors from using artificial UV tanning services. This is important preventative community health work because no level of UV tanning is safe, especially for minors. By educating youth on the dangers and preventing harmful exposure, we hope to reduce the incidence and burden of skin cancer in our community. Model policy language from the American Cancer Society.

Methods Survey of tanning establishments in Bozeman
Number of UV tanning beds FDA labels Percentage of minors Policy Sent out via ; follow-up with phone call Identified 11 establishments in Bozeman 1 no longer offers UV tanning Currently collecting information on tanning establishments in Bozeman via survey, asking questions about the number of tanning beds, if they are labeled with FDA warning labels, percentage of clients that are minors, and if they have a policy requiring minors to obtain parent/guardian signature before tanning. This survey was sent out via initially and we plan to do a follow-up phone call if no response. We identified 11 establishments in Bozeman to send the survey to, but one no longer offers tanning. May be one limitation to this, difficult to identify all of the tanning establishments as they are not regulated.

Originality & Significance
There have been several attempts to pass state legislature that would prevent youth from using indoor UV tanning facilities, but none have been successful. The Tri-County Cancer coalition hopes that by starting with a local ordinance, it would generate momentum for other communities and municipalities and work up towards a state-wide restriction.
