The student will gain an understanding of understand figurative language by analyzing how figurative words and phrases can shape the meaning of a text. I can identify different types of figurative language, interpret their meanings, and create my own!

Inferring Figurative Language
In order to understand figurative language, you must have inferring skills! This is why we have been working on our inferring skills over the last few weeks. We have been inferring things in our texts by analyzing their LITERAL meanings, but now we must be able to infer things in our texts by analyzing their FIGURATIVE meanings.

Literal Language Vs. Figurative Language
The dictionary definition of a word or a phrase. EXAMPLE- The fox is an animal that lives in the forest. The text means exactly what it says.

Literal Language Vs. Figurative Language
A creative way to say something by making a comparison. EXAMPLE- “You are a fox.” The text does not mean exactly what it says. What would it mean if someone said you were a fox? (Think sly fox).

Actions speak louder than words. (Do your actions REALLY speak?) She stole my thunder. (Did you REALLY even own the thunder?) The classroom was a zoo. (Is the classroom an ACTUAL zoo?) Her tears flowed like a river down her cheeks. (Are her tears REALLY an actual river?)

Why do I need to understand figurative language?
Understanding figurative language can help us better understand a text. It can help us understand the tone or attitude the author is trying to portray. It can help us understand emotional content better, even humor.

Types of figurative language- Simile
We will be learning about nine, but for today we are only going to go over FIVE. Simile- The comparing of two unlike things by using words “like” or “as”. EXAMPLES: You were as brave as a lion. They fought like cats and dogs.

Types of figurative language!- Metaphor
2. Metaphor- The direct comparison of two unlike things. EXAMPLES: You are my sunshine. America is a melting pot. Thank you so much, you are an angel.

Types of figurative language!- Alliteration
3. Alliteration- The repetition of sounds at the beginning of words. EXAMPLES: She sells sea shells by the sea shore. Can you keep the cat from clawing the couch? It's creating chaos.

4. Personification- Giving human characteristics to something non-human. EXAMPLES: The wind howled in the night. Rita heard the last piece of pie calling her name.

5. Repetition- repeating of a word, within a sentence or poetical line. EXAMPLES: Humpty Dumpty Songs
