Purpose of research
Evaluation of the specific effectiveness of attention training for individuals with mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI).
Sample
4 patients (3 females, one male; ages 31-35) who were at least 3-months post-injury, with low scores on 2 out of 6 pre-treatment attention measures and a self-report.
Method
Experimental group: Practiced 3 different working memory tasks, with an emphasis on use of strategies. Strategies included, verbal mediation, rehearsal, anticipation of demands, and self-pacing.
Control group: No treatment (matched as closely as possible to age, gender, education, months post-injury, and pre-post testing intervals)
Results
Experimental group was more likely to improve on standardized and self-reported measures of attention in their daily lives.
Limitations
Convenience sample, age, and control group
