Intrinsic motivation You can’t make students be intrinsically motivated, but you can nudge them towards enjoying English!

How?? Be ENTHUSIASTIC!!! Engaging Activities Fake it ‘til you make it
Students’ interests And your interests Group work Game/race Variety of activities You must be enthusiastic in class! If you’re not the most enthusiastic person, put on a smile in class and fake it until you do become enthusiastic. Make the activities interesting for you as well, so you can be enthusiastic about them! And put your personal touch on them. Students will be interested to learn about you!

Take a moment to explain why “It’ll be on the test…”

Take a moment to explain why “We’ll be practicing giving directions, so if a tourist asks you how to get somewhere, you can help them.” Any more examples? Use what you learn If teaching a new skill, use it in an activity so students can see how it’s relevant! Group activities Role play – real life situations

Activity! Any volunteers?
Give 3 cards to each volunteer, and they can choose two other people to give the other cards to. Ask everyone to read their cards and line up in order from least motivating to most motivating activities. Read their activities to everyone else in order. Discuss why some are more motivating than others.
