2 What is an adequate teacher?
Reliably goes to class on time and teaches Predominately uses “sage on the stage” approach to teaching Occasionally updates course content Uses homework and test grades for feedback Passes back graded material in a timely manner Meets with advisees regularly

3 What is a good teacher? Uses a variety of teaching styles and techniques Realizes that learning occurs not only in the classroom but outside of it as well Uses embedded classroom assessment techniques for continuous feedback on learning in addition to tests and grades Advises the student with a goal of on-time graduation and ultimately professional placement and success in the workplace Mentors graduate students Attends teaching workshops and seminars

4 What is an excellent teacher?
In the classroom: Keeps students engaged using a variety of innovative approaches Uses feedback in a formative manner to improve the course Incorporates experiential and service learning Demands rigor and challenges the student Outside of the classroom: Advises undergraduates with emphasis on retention timely graduation and placement Helps students find internship and international opportunities Helps to mentor student clubs and activities Involved in recruiting particularly underrepresented groups Sponsors and directs undergraduate research and honors projects Serves on or leads committees such as graduate or undergraduate coordinator, scholarship committee, recruiting committee Mentors graduate students with the intent to publish the work

5 What is an excellent teacher?
Open to continual improvement Attends teaching improvement workshops Invites observation and assessment of teaching effectiveness Uses the resources of the Teaching and Learning Innovation Center In the larger professional world Participates in and presents at national meetings on teaching Writes peer-reviewed publications to share best practices in teaching Receives awards from the department, college, university, professional society, and even national recognition (USDA Teaching) Seeks funding from external sources to augment teaching or other aspects of the student life USDA Workforce Preparation HEC College or University mini-grants An excellent teacher clearly demonstrates SCHOLARSHIP

6 What is scholarship of teaching?
Ensuring the work is made public Is susceptible to critical review and evaluation; Is accessible for exchange and use by other members of one’s scholarly community.

7 Scholarly Teachers… consider how something should be taught;
how students learn; draw upon the research of scholars; are self-reflective teachers who … identify a problem/challenge related to teaching and learning research strategies/potential solutions test strategies/potential solutions assess success/impact (positive and negative)

8 Evidence of Scholarship
something new must be created should make a difference in one or more disciplines or result in a more informed public must be shared/made public must incorporate a mechanism for peer review/validation might include, but not limited to journal articles, reports, lectures, popular press articles, websites, CDs, outreach efforts, public performances, electronic publishing, …
