The Panic of 1893 The Philadelphia and Reading Railroad and the National Cordage Company were the leading companies of the nation at this time. When these leaders’ crashed so did the rest of the nation. Not only did these companies take a hit, but so did the stock market causing even more chaos within the nation. Trying to recover, banks took out loans and causing those businesses to take a down fall as well.

Election of 1896 The Election of 1896 was a tight battle between William McKinley (Republican) and William Jennings Bryan (Democrat). These two candidates were the complete opposite of one another. While one campaigned on the road, the other campaigned from his “front porch”. Although they were neck-to-neck in state votes, Jennings lost by 95 Electoral votes, causing him to lose the election.

William McKinley “Front Porch Campaign”
Born in 1843, he became an emerging leader. It was said that William McKinley campaigned for his election, giving speeches but he did not travel. Despite his lack of warfare he still won over the people winning the election of He lead the country out of a depression and help to gain possession of Guam, Hawaii, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and some parts of American Samoa.

William Jennings Bryan
A Democrat whom opposed the gold standard and whom ran for president three times, and failed each time. At the Democratic National convention in 1896, he gave a famous speech stating that "Having behind us the producing masses of this nation and the world, supported by the commercial interests, the laboring interests, and the toilers everywhere, we will answer their demand for a gold standard by saying to them: You shall not press down upon the brow of labor this crown of thorns, you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold.“. Because of his famous speech he was nominated was finally nominated for presidency at the young age of 36. He made more than 600 speeches in 27 states, unlike his opponent McKinley. Though McKinley still won. He supported the many interpretations of the Bible and the prohibition of alcohol.

James B Weaver A popular member of the Greenback Party and a famous opponent of the gold standard and national banks. He was a nominee of the Populist Party in the 1892 election. Weaver supported Jennings in the election. Jennings betrayed him and lost his support. Because of this many Populist ideas and the Populist Party itself was slowly flushed.

Goldbugs Goldbugs are the persons whom oppose the silverties. They believed that gold should be within the standard. For every dollar within the banks there is gold to back it up. For instance, if you have $ in the bank there is $ within its place.

Silverites Silverites are the people whom believe that silver should be within the standards. They said that for every dollar there should be silver to replace it.

McKinley Presidency As president wanted to increase and raise protective tariffs in which he was successful in doing. He also passed the Gold Standard, in which only one could only exchange money for gold. He made it so that the people could contact him at almost any time. To solve the conflict between the Cubans and Spain, McKinley said to negotiate with the enemies. However they wanted to remain neutral. McKinley said that the “United States would go to war if necessary”. The war lasted 113 days. Spain surrendered and the United States gained the Philippines for $20 million. The Philippines later revolted and lost. McKinley opened a policy known as the Open-Door Policy, where all nations were able to access profitable trade in China. He was assassinated. He was shot at twice but the first shot was reflected by a button. In 1901 McKinley died of gangrene.

Annexation of Hawaii American citizens within Hawaii had mentioned a revolution. They asked us to annex the island. Before the Senate could ratify the treaty of annexation Cleveland's second term began. He felt as if thought the Americans’ put the country between a rock and a hard place and withdrew the treaty. Hawaii remained independent until 1898.

Gold Standard The Gold Standard is the use of gold as the standard of value for the money within a country. For every dollar there is a set amount of gold to back it up. Many countries had adopted this option, but like us many abandoned it. The price of gold decreased, causing for no use in the standard.
