1 QW #9 12/13 Provide five sentences of commentary
This prediction can be done as a journal or writer’s notebook entry. LT- I can analyze a text for evidence that is supportive and valuable to my claim. SC- I can collect and explain evidence from texts that support my belief about protests

2 Now, 2 things to consider, 1.How do I write commentary?

3 2. Which evidence IS STRONGEST?
Claim-Protesting is overdone and abused in our society; people should only protest when they feel strongly about an issue. a. “These days not a week goes by without news that a massive crowd has amassed in the street of another of the world’s big cities.” b. “Such global, massive, and seemingly well- organized initiatives should have greater impact. But they didn’t.” c. “From a legal standpoint, segregation was put to rest in 1964 with the signing of the civil rights.” LT- I can analyze a text for evidence that is supportive and valuable to my claim. SC- I can collect and explain evidence from texts that support my belief about the protesting.

4 Example commentary Other possible commentary strategies not shown here: Rant/rave Real World Connection Claim-Protesting is overdone and abused in our society; people should only protest when they feel strongly about an issue. Evidence: “These days not a week goes by without news that a massive crowd has amassed in the street of another of the world’s big cities.” Sample Commentary 1: I cannot think of the last time I went on social media and wasn’t bombarded with people talking about protests this or boycotting that. People should be focused on positives and making the world better rather than constantly complaining and protesting every little thing. Sample Commentary 2-I know I just love hearing about protesting, boycotting, and sit-ins every time I look at my phone or turn on the television. I know I don’t have enough stress in my life without hearing other people complain all the time. Sample Commentary 3- How many times have you gone to flip through your phone in an effort to relax and be distracted for a moment from life’s daily struggles, but instead your feed in flooded with protesting and politics? Protesting is just so overused in our society. We do not need to protest every little issue- there are other ways to deal with society’s struggles. Possible Commentary Strategies shown here: Insight or analysis Sarcasm Rhetorical questions

5 Which evidence could you best explain?
Claim-Protesting is an important right that often creates positive changes in our society. a. “African Americans began to standup for their rights without fear, form a cultural movement to promote the new found pride they took in their race.” b. “Protest events are not persuasive in and of themselves, but they invite persuasion. They invite change.” c. “None was more important or positive than the 19th amendment, which formally granted women the right to vote.”       LT- I can analyze a text for evidence that is supportive and valuable to my claim. SC- I can collect and explain evidence from texts that support my belief about the protesting.
