1 Weathering, Erosion , & Deposition The Wearing Down and Building Up of Earth

2 Erosion Erosion is the removal of rock particles from a location.
Caused by water, wind, ice, or gravity.

3 DISCUSS with your table:
What is the connection between weathering and erosion?? Why is it important to know what weathering is first? How does this affect the Earth? Us?

4 Make a note! What is Erosion? What causes Erosion?

5 Add to your notes! CAUSED BY: WATER WIND ICE GRAVITY EROSION

6 WATER EROSION Water sources such as rivers, streams, ocean tides, and runoff can move rock particles away....

7 Water Erosion-Rivers Rivers and streams carry sediment. As the sediment moves mechanical weathering occurs. Through water erosion, rivers create waterfalls, flood plains, and valleys.

11 Water Erosion-Waves Waves- waves shape the coasts by transporting sand. While the sand is moved, mechanical weathering occurs. Waves create sea stacks, caves, arch, and wave-cut cliffs.

12 Erosion by Runoff As water from precipitation (rain, snow, etc.) moves over the land, it carries particles with it. The moving water is called runoff. Runoff creates rills and gullies.

13 WIND EROSION Sometimes the wind can move rock particles away: this can lead to dust storms!

14 WIND EROSION Wind Erosion creates dust storms, hoodoos, and arches.

15 Ice Erosion As a glacier flows over the land, it picks up rocks in a process called plucking.

16 Ice Erosion Ice erosion creates: U-shaped valleys, glacial lakes, moraines, drumlins, and kettle lakes.

17 Ice Erosion Ice erosion creates: U-shaped valleys, glacial lakes, moraines, drumlins, and kettle lakes.

18 Think about it…. Water is NEEDED by all living things to survive.
So let’s review, how does water change the planet? Let’s write a note.

19 Erosion by Gravity Gravity causes sediment to move downhill.
It creates: landslides, mudflows, and creeps.

20 Analyze your learning…
So, what’s the difference between weathering and erosion again??? Write it in your notes.

21 Rate your learning…. So with a thumbs up, down, or sideways, do you…
Understand what erosion is? Know the difference between weathering and erosion? Understand how weathering and erosion work together?

22 Weathering and Erosion work together continuously to wear down and carry away the rocks at the Earth’s surface!!!!! END - Erosion

23 Deposition Deposition is the process in which sediment laid down in new locations. Caused by water, wind, ice, and gravity.

24 Think about it… What needs to happen before deposition can occur?
Why does it make sense to study deposition after weathering and erosion?

25 What causes Deposition?
Make a note! What is Deposition? What causes Deposition?

26 Add to your notes! CAUSED BY: water wind ice gravity Deposition

28 Rate your learning…. So with a thumbs up, down, or sideways, do you…
Understand deposition? Know the connection between weathering, erosion, and deposition? Understand why deposition was the last thing we covered AFTER weathering and erosion?
