1 Force Diagrams

2 Different types Type of Force Exampels Push Pull (Tension) Gravity
Surface (Normal) Friction Air Resistance Weight

3 Representing Forces When drawing forces, we use VECTORS.
Arrows point in the direction of the force. Length = strength *Longer arrow = stronger force

4 Balanced vs. Unbalanced. Balanced – No acceleration
Balanced vs. Unbalanced Balanced – No acceleration Unbalanced – Acceleration to the bigger Force

5 Net Force = Total Force. Same direction = add
Net Force = Total Force Same direction = add Opposite direction = subtract 5 N 10 N 20 N 10 N 10 N 10 N

6 Drawing Force Diagrams
Drawing that shows direction and strength of ALL forces acting on the object Length = strength Label arrows (with units) Arrow starts at the object (Do not stab your drawing)

7 Bad Diagram 50 N 20 N

8

9 Extra tips Fg is always straight down
Fn is perpendicular to the surface (walls don’t usually push up) Ff is always opposite of motion!
