1 Warm-up 1.What is the speed of a car that has traveled 50 km in 30 minutes? 50 km / 30 min = 1.67 km/min or 50,000 m /1800s = m/s

2 Using a Scientific Model to Predict Speed
Key Question: Why are scientific models important?

3 What is a model? A representation of a real life structure, idea, or concept.

4 Types of Models 1.Mental models
2.Physical models – can be looked at, touched, and measured 3.Conceptual models – describes a system and how it works

5 4.Graphic models – shows the relationship between two variables on a graph so that the relationship is easily seen and understood.

6 Speed vs. time graph A Speed vs. time graph shows both the relationship between the variables as well as how much one variable affects another.

7 Speed vs. time graph

8 Graph that shows a steady relationship between variables will help us identify relationships that exist in nature and can also be used to predict unknown values.

9 Why are scientific models important?
They provide a way to visualize and sometimes manipulate a concept or idea.
