1 Notes #4: Naming Covalent Compounds
WCHS Chemistry NEED PERIODIC TABLE & POLY ION SHEET QUIZ THURSDAY

2 REVIEW: NAMING IONIC COMPOUNDS
Ionic bond = a bond formed by the attraction of oppositely charged ions (give or take e-) Between a metal and a nonmetal Total charge must equal zero!!! Calcium Sulfide Magnesium Chloride

3

4 NAMING COVALENT COMPOUNDS
Covalent bond = a bond formed by the atoms sharing valence electrons Between nonmetals CO2

5 RULES: NAMING COVALENT COMPOUNDS
Write the name of the 1st element Write the name of the 2nd element with -ide ending Use prefixes to tell the number of atoms of each element NOTE: Mono is NEVER used to name the FIRST element! Sulfur dioxide Dinitrogen hexafluoride SO2 N2F6

6 ** No charges are needed!**
You must be able to go the other way! ** No charges are needed!** Nitrogen trifluoride NF3 Diphosphorous trisulfide P2S3

7 Rule Breaker CO Carbon monooxide? Carbon monoxide When the prefix puts 2 vowels together, drop the “a” or “o” at the end of the prefix! The “i” at the end of “di-” and “tri-” is NEVER dropped!

8 diphosphorous pentoxide P2O5
When the prefix puts 2 vowels together, drop the “a” or “o” at the end of the prefix! The “i” at the end of “di-” and “tri-” is NEVER dropped! SO2 Sulfur dioxide diphosphorous pentoxide P2O5 NI3 Nitrogen triiodide
