2. Established in 1917, Ellington Field was one of the first military airfields in the United States and was named after Lieutenant Eric Ellington, who was killed on a training mission. The ATC tower was constructed in 1954. NASA established Ellington Field as its base for astronaut flight training in the early 60s. In 1976 Ellington Field was officially deactivated by the Air Force, however, the Texas Air National Guard, Texas Army National Guard and the US Coast Guard maintained military presence. Ellington Field was acquired by the City of Houston in 1984 to use as a third civil airport and was renamed Ellington Airport on January 14, 2009. HISTORY
