The Smart Islands programme
What next ?
2
Current and upcoming projects
About to start Council led projects Organic Waste Treatment & Energy Recovery GO-EV Car share Business support and renewable installation (BEES)
3
Organic Waste Treatment & Energy Recovery
Aim Improve on island waste management incl. organic waste (food waste; green waste; sewage sludge) Facilitate the generation of renewable energy Soil conditioner for beneficial on island reuse Options AD/Gasifier feasibility and design - discounted? In vessel composting & energy recovery? Location? March 2021 funding deadline
4
Organic Waste Treatment & Energy Recovery
Reduce mainland export of waste and recyclates Alternative to exporting sewage slurry resulting from new waste water treatment methods Increase the on island reuse of materials (soil conditioner) On island energy production from thermal treatment of bulky waste products
5
GO-EV Electric Vehicles
The Isles of Scilly Carbon intensive community Reliant on costly imported fuel Lack of public transport High number of cars GO-EV Electric Vehicles Low carbon alternative Prime location – 15km roads Boost the Islands’ green credentials Car usage without having to own a car The Innovation Test Vehicle to Grid (V2G) technology with a car share scheme Store and discharge energy back into the grid during peak demand Using renewable energy sources when possible Car Share Scheme 25 charging points, solar canopies 10 car share -15 general use Residents and local business only Pay per use, return to base Mixture of vehicles Booking via app/web
6
Business Opportunities
GO-EV Car Share Car share scheme Charging network and infrastructure Replicable model Business Opportunities Could a van share work ? Trail Would the EV charging network be useful? What could we do to assist? Are these the right types of vehicle? What are the barriers? Are you a potential champion?
7
Business Energy Efficiency Scheme (BEES)
Business support on energy efficiency and renewable installation Grant up to 60% (max.£17,500) for SMEs Can fund renewable energy installations including Photovoltaic solar Solar thermal Air source heat pumps Can fund energy efficiency measures including Insulation LEDS
8
Business Energy Efficiency Scheme (BEES) Objectives
To support min. 50 businesses Help businesses save £75,000 pa on energy cost Reduce CO2 emissions by 76,000kg/year 220kw renewable energy production Paid against defrayed costs- does this cause a cash flow issue? Spend by end March what is possible How can we help businesses access the funding? How can businesses use joint purchasing power?
9
The Smart Islands programme
Challenges and Opportunities Community Venture sharing the benefits Missing MW (wind/marine/other) E- Health Water and sewerage upgrade Smart Homes Future Homes Standard? Off grid? Container homes?
10
Workshops 3 x 15 mins GO-EV BEES Waste management
Key points feedback from each
