Why should we care? Numbers don’t lie > 1,094,729 international students > U.S. > 2017/18 (Open Doors, 2018) Cultural (mis)representations (Holliday, Kullman & Hyde, 2017) Culturism & culturist language (Holliday et al., 2017) Intercultural competence models (Byram, 1997; Deardorff, 2009; Dervin, 2016) Chinese students > Long-standing stereotypes (Shi, 2006) We are conscious human beings and recognize the need for constant professional and personal development They bring great diversity to cultures of learning We are all human therefore we bring our humanity to the classroom, so do students = we are often guilty of generalizations & pre-conceptions that tend to enforce stereotypes, leading to prejudice and resulting in othering >>> it’s important to reflect upon what informs our judgements: prior info OR in-situ observations Culturism = culture becomes greater than the people themselves --- culturist lng – when we think we show empathy and understanding BUT in fact we patronize They’ve been around for a while – in need of critical scrutiny as well as updating in context of SLLers Western academia (problematized and defined): Ch sts=dependent, passive rote learners in need to copy their Western counterparts > The Chinese Learner myth

What’s interculturality in teaching and learning all about?
Intersects with democratic citizenship, human rights education, conflict transformation and global education Has the potential for social transformation Values diversity and promotes a world view that diversity is rooted in equality Is about multiperspectivity Stands against discrimination and other forms of intolerance and social injustice Offers an alternative to multiculturalism Promotes equal opportunities and active participation by giving everyone a voice Takes into account the political and structural implications of everyday life - The multiculturalism: goes beyond simple cohabition or respecting cultural identities “from a distance”; facilitates dialogue

How can we help each other?
YOU are invited to: Provide feedback on the activities, Share your take on the ICC in general, Reflect on your teaching practices, “School me” through the lenses of your expertise. I will: Present you with activities that I deem helpful when working with international students (so hopefully for your classes), Listen to your feedback and welcome it, Look forward to discussing how those activities could be improved and so on.

Let’s get to work, shall we?!
