MOTIVATION low Language proficiency level The language standard among students in the department of English is obviously low and of course there should be some satisfactory explanation for this undesirable fact; indeed, it’s due to some disruption in one of the four language teaching skills .It is hypothesized that reading is where the disruption is to be found , so it is time to dig up deeply into the core this skill. General statement This research paper examines students’ attitudes towards the skill of reading in addition to the factors that motivate them to read. The current research claims that the unsatisfactory language proficiency of students at Ibn Zohr university is due to the negative attitudes to reading.

Results Findings are remarkably negative and indicate that the majority of students are indifferent readers(e.g. only 11% manage to read all the assigned reading) the choices in reading are delimited to the what is suggested by the educators ;in other words, students do no go beyond the academic tasks and school books.
