Issues at the airport made it difficult to get aid into the area. Transport and communication links were damaged. Due to the pile of bodies, diseases became a serious problem. The main prison was destroyed releasing 4,000 inmates from imprisonment. People were squashed into shanty towns or on the streets since their homes had been destroyed.
