5th Grade News ELA/ Reading In ELA this week, we will continue with our unit on opinion writing. Students will read a pair of articles and organize their ideas using both a t chart and an OREO structure. Then they will begin their drafts. Students will take a daily grade quiz on Friday over their opinion writing knowledge. We will continue reading Bud, Not Buddy this week as well as focus on making inferences. No homework or test this week. MATH This week we will be finding a common denominator between fractions. We will also add and subtract fractions after finding a common denominator. Homework will be sent home on WEDNESDAY this week and will be due Friday. There will also be an assessment on Friday over fractions with unlike denominators. We will finish our unit over the Great Depression this week. We will research the culture of the 1930's and review for our test on Friday. Students will have homework on Thursday and test on Friday. A study guide went home today. SCIENCE We will finish our unit over Genetics with a test on Thursday (1/24). A study guide was sent home last week. Spelling/Vocabulary Words chapters 7-11:
“riding the rails”: jumping on trains without a ticket and riding empty cars “hopping a train”: getting on a train when it is moving “cardboard jungle”: a place where hobos go to hide out when they get off of trains. Many hobos would use these boxes as homes. orphanage: (noun) A home for children who have no family hypnotized: (verb or adjective) focused so carefully on one thing that you can’t see anything else taste: (noun or verb) You know what taste is as a sense in its verb form. The noun form means what you like (someone has good taste in books or music). devoured: (verb) ate really quickly Homework makes up 5% of your child's grade. It should be returned the day it is due (usually the day after it is assigned). No credit will be given for late homework unless the student was absent the day it was due. In that case, it should be returned the day the student returns to school. If a student has difficulty completing the assignment, he/she should see the teacher who assigned the homework during homeroom or before that class period begins.
