1 Partnerships for Pro-Poor Technology
Introduction: My name is Carlos Guaipatin, and I work at the Inter-American Development Bank. I am here to share some experiences on using partnerships to reach the poor. Carlos Guaipatin Inter-American Development Bank

2 When do technologies benefit the poor?
when they address their main needs When do technologies benefit the poor? The answer is quite obvious – technologies benefit the poor when they address their main needs/

3 What are their main needs?
This takes us to the next question: what ARE their main needs? we want to work with the poor and excluded. By definition, we don´t know what their needs are because they are excluded. They don’t even have a voice...

4 Can we ask the excluded directly?
By definition, we don´t know what their needs are because they are excluded. They don’t even have a voice... Can we ask the excluded directly? RESUMIR

5 part of the solution “A World of Solutions”
Partnerships with the excluded part of the solution Our initiative “A world of solutions” is about just that: to also partner with the excluded, not only with universities, or multilaterals. Ask them directly what their problems are, and help them be part of the solution

6 One of the world´s most excluded groups: People with disabilities
So for our pilot case, we started by choosing one of the world’s most excluded groups: people with disabilities . They are often both poor and excluded. Poor people are more likely to be disabled, and disabled people are more likely to be poor.

7 Here´s the crowdsourcing model
Here´s the crowdsourcing model. A company has a problem, and asks the public for solutions. Innovators submit their solutions. Innovators vote on these solutions. RESUMIR Y COLOCAR LAMINA DE NUESTRO MODELO . AQUI ES DONDE MOSTRAMOS EL HECHO DE QUE UN PROBLEMA ES UNA IDEA UNA IDEA ES UNA INNOVACION Y TODO SE CONECTA

8 IDEAS EXCLUDED WORLD TECHNOLOGY WORLD PROBLEMS SOLUTIONS
We decided to turn this around. Our model is quite simple. We launched a competition of problems. The excluded express their problems trough a webpage. They vote for the most relevant problems. Then We launch a contest for solutions. Suddenly what are problems in the world of the excluded, become ideas in the technology world. Suddenly we may find solutions. Intro to video: Let me show you a short video about the first phase of the project, where we interview the winners of the competition of problems:

Our partnership story Social Inclusion Trust Fund The first partners provided the financing

11 We partnered with experts on disability to support the implementation of the project.

12 Uruguay ANII We are all partners in finding solutions. We believe it is important to see partnerships as fluid, where each partner can change his or her role – from donor, to collaborator, to beneficiary – or the other way around. All parties bring important knowledge and know-how to the table.

13 Mobile Citizen Program
Rafael Anta The program is called Mobile Citizen and is financed by the Italian Trust Fund. This program also partnered with several other companies and institutions.

14 $ 10,000,000 Another team member also followed the same model and launched a ten million dollar project this time focused on MicroFinance.

15 Donors Innovators Beneficiaries Collaborators
The most interesting part of this program has been the dynamic nature of the partnerships. One important partner, MIT, started out as a beneficiary, receiving financing from one of our projects, before they became a crucial innovation partner, and then a collaborator, bringing knowledge and resources to the region.

16 D-Lab Latin America – an MIT-IDB Project:
A partnership with all the engineering faculties of Brasil, Chile, Uruguay and Argentina D-Lab is working with us to create a latinamerican D-Lab with several engineering faculties that want to design technologies that address the needs of the poor, and to facilitate the creation of new firms.
