Case study lead concentration & deposition in the Netherlands
Eric van der Swaluw, Benno Jimmink, Bert Leekstra, Addo van Pul (RIVM) Ilia Ilyin (MSC-E) 8 May TFMM Zagreb
2
Outline measurements modelling 8 May TFMM Zagreb
3
Motivation: Assessment of lead concentration and deposition in the
Netherlands Analysis of how well monitoring is able to represent the lead concentration and deposition in the Netherlands 8 May TFMM Zagreb
4
Measurements in the Netherlands
Since 2008 measurements have been performed in configuration: AIR PRECIPITATION 8 May TFMM Zagreb
5
Measurements in the Netherlands
Since reduction took place due to budget-cuts : AIR PRECIPITATION 8 May TFMM Zagreb
6
Quality of air measurements
Leckel - PM10 Frequency: every other day Operational since Correction factor of for lead measurements before 2008 Hafkenscheid et al. (2010) 8 May TFMM Zagreb
7
Quality of precipitation data
Wet-only samplers Eigenbrodt NSA 181 KHT Operational since Current sampling frequency is on weekly basis 8 May TFMM Zagreb

Emissions in the Netherlands 1
Source: Lead emissions from the grid of emission registration are transformed (indicated by the blue arrow) to the EMEP grid Standard Pb emissions for 2007 EMEP Grid (50x50) 8 May TFMM Zagreb

17
Conclusions so far … Large-scale gradient SW – NE in concentration and deposition Large-scale gradient “picked up” with measurements of concentration Peak values as observed in the simulation results clearly not “picked up” by measurements 8 May TFMM Zagreb
18
Prospects Simulation runs for 2007-2009 Comparison with measurements
Special focus on peak concentration in the Netherlands (2009) Analyze year-to-year variation due to meteo effects Other heavy metals (Hg & Cd) Analysis of critical loads 8 May TFMM Zagreb
