Art gallery Building Size Project Dates Saint-Gobain Products & Systems Rigips Habito Rigips Die Weiße Rigips Die Blaue Rigips Die Dicke The prize-winning design of the new exhibition building by GMP architects Gerkan, Marg und Partner in Hamburg, is a wonderful and modern extention of the existing art nouveau building of the Mannheim Kunstmuseum (museum for arts on the left side). The new exhibition building fundamentally differs from the old type of museums. The underlying design openly hints at the historical urban structure of Mannheim: Seven ‘exhibition houses’ surround a central atrium that has been created as a huge enormous central space, similar to the entrance area of the existing building with its high domed ceiling. Each atrium is meant to be a place where the citizens of Mannheim can meet with friends, to talk and stroll together, before visiting the collections and galleries. The arrangement of several cubes generates multi-variable spaces through their array, heights and widths. There are exhibition cubes and galleries, alleys, bridges, planks, patios and a roof garden. The urban dynamics, methods and patterns are part of the museum experience on an enormous floor space of m². To realise this prestigious project the following quantities of Rigips premium products were used: 4.900 m² Rigips Habito 3.800m² Rigips Die Weiße 750m² Rigips Die Blaue 500 m² Rigips Die Dicke 8.000 kg Rigips SUPER jointfiller 1.400 kg ProMix Finish m metal studs RigiProfil MultiTec CW 8.000 m metal studs RigiProfil MultiTec UW 2.400 m metal studs for ceilings 9.000 m Rigips joint tape

5 Presentation of the project
New building is part of the urban structure of Mannheim with an arrangement of several cubes and a 700 m² atrium with a height of 22 meters Drylining volume of 1,5 Mio € 7.500 m² walls 6.000 m² ceilings The new Kunsthalle is a cosmopolitan space incorporating the surrounding city and at the same time incorporating itself through architecture, activities and a fascinating mix of experiences. Simultaneously the urban expanse flows into and through the museum. The approach to art and intelligent recovery is unobstructed. Inside the visitors easily find their way around, being able to focus on their interest and needs – arts, catering, bar, shop or a quiet corner for a time out amidst the exuberant daily routine. In this new building Jaeger Ausbau installed a total of m² walls and m² ceilings with a total drylining volume of 1,5 million €

6 The architects specified the construction of the walls and ceilings with multi layer boards. This specification was based on their experience, that this was the perfect material for changing exhibitions, where constantly changing art objects had be fixed directly onto any part of the walls and ceilings. Another requirement in the specification was to achieve a perfectly white surface in Q4 quality, as the exhibition areas and the atrium had an excellent illumination and large window panes. Jaeger Ausbau with their profound knowledge of the Rigips product range and their open mind for innovative solutions, suggested to change this specification to a drylining wall and ceiling construction with the new Rigips Habito as first layer and Rigips Die Weiße (plasterboard with a white paper face) as outer layer. Together with the Rigips technician they were able to convince the architect and the building owner to use this innovative drylining solution in this outstanding new building.

7 Main characteristics of this project?
Wall heights up to 30m suitable for fixing varying exhibits Sound insulation and fire protection Q4 surface in all exhibition areas Change of specification to Rigips Habito in combination with Rigips “Die Weiße” The main characteristics of this building are Wall heights up to 30m suitable for fixing varying exhibits Sound insulation and fire protection for a public building Q4 surface in all exhibition areas Change of specification to Rigips Habito in combination with Rigips “Die Weiße” The central atrium is the largest room in the museum and has a size of 700 m² and a height of 22 meters. Due to it’s impressive glass rooftop, the room is light-flooded.

8 RigiProfil MultiTec CW and UW First layer: Use of Rigips Habito
Rigips Habito was used as a first layer due to its innovative features which guarantee: The fixing of heavy and difficult items such as all kinds of artwork without any need for drills or special fixings; the strength of the board allows them to be simply screwed straight into the wall and ceiling surface at any point Habito guarantees furthermore durable walls, that are more resistant to damage and stay looking smarter for longer There is no need for pre-planned, pre-installed pattresing, which means that interiors can be redesigned time and time again, making it an ideal solution for museums In total m² of Rigips Habito boards were installed with m CW studs and m UW studs. For the ceiling construction m Rigips ceiling studs were used.

9 Outer layer: Designboard Rigips Die Weiße
 Innovative solution /change of specification In order to achieve the required surface quality of Q4, Rigips design board Rigips Die Weiße was used as outer layer. Rigips Die Weiße has a nearly white paper face and is therefore the ideal solution for an optimal surface quality in highly illuminated rooms. The combination of these two innovative Rigips products and their special product features was the decisive factor for the change in the specification.

10 The metal framing was important as well, as it had to be planned in order to bear not only the two layers of plasterboard but in addition a load of 150 kg per running meter and a point load of 80 kg. This was also applicable for all freestanding walls in the exhibition space with heights up to 7,50 meters.

11 Ceiling hights: 30 – 5 meters logistic according to the height
Surface quality: Q4 Ceiling hights: 30 – 5 meters logistic according to the height The very high riquirements of the surface quality were achieved by using Rigips Die Weiße, Rigips Super jointfiller as jointing material and Promix Finish as finishing compound. Ceiling heights of up to 30 meters were realised in some areas, whereas in all the exhibition cubes the ceiling heights amounted to 5 meters. During the installation of the studs and the plasterboard these heights had to be realised with special scaffolds and building site logistics. Just to give you an idea of the sheer size of this building site, there were up to 60 different contracting companies were working at the same time. The new art gallery has a floor space of m², which is roughly the size of two soccer fields

12 Key challenges Installation of a new Rigips system (Rigips Habito / Rigips Die Weiße) New system had to guarantee the fixing of exhibits in all walls and ceilings and their simple exchange Wall heights (up to 30 m) required a special scaffolding and interior crane logistics Load requirements concerning the installation of the metal studs Complex work flow with the other lots, e.g. delays of preliminary lots lead to permanent change of the drylining work schedule Q4 wall and ceiling surface quality was required Installation of a new Rigips system (Rigips Habito / Rigips Die Weiße) New system had to guarantee the fixing of exhibits in all walls and ceilings and their simple exchange Wall heights (up to 30 m) required a special scaffolding and interior crane logistics Load requirements concerning the installation of the metal studs Complex work flow with the other lots, e.g. delays of preliminary lots lead to permanent change of the drylining work schedule Q4 wall and ceiling surface quality was required
