4. The Indian government tried to reform the caste system:
Discrimination against Untouchables made illegal.
Government set aside jobs and places in Universities for Untouchables.
Caste system is STILL a part of Indian society.

5. Religious Conflicts
Kashmir – northern point of India has a Muslim majority. 1/3 of the region is under Pakistani control and the rest is under Indian control. India and Pakistan continue to fight over Kashmir today.
Both India and Pakistan have nuclear weapons which makes the dispute over Kashmir a serious concern.

Punjab – Sihks seek independence for Indian state of Punjab. Fighting continues today.

7. Overpopulation
Difficult for nation of 400 million people to produce enough food to avoid starvation.
Many peasants fled to cities slums.
