1 Unit 2: Box Plots (Tukey) Descriptive Statistics Part Four
Thinking within the box, and without

2 (Tukey) Box Plots TUKEY BOX PLOTS: A Tukey Box Plot (sometimes called a box-and-whisker plot) is a method of displaying data, invented by the mathematician John Tukey ( ). Tukey Box Plots give key information that allow the reader to quickly summarize data and make certain reasoned conclusion without having to examine the data.

3 (Tukey) Box Plots A boxplot can show whether a data set is symmetric (roughly the same on each side when cut down the middle) or skewed (lop-sided). A symmetric data set shows the median roughly in the middle of the box. The median, part of the five-number summary and the six- figure summary, is shown by the line that cuts through the box in the boxplot. Five-Number Summary: Min, Q1, Median, Q3, Max Six-Figure Summary: Min, Q1, Median, Q3, Max, Mean

4 (Tukey) Box Plots Q1 Median Q3 Outlier
Mean: 9 SET = { 1, 5, 7, 7, 8, 9, 9, 10, 11, 13, 19 } Min Q1 Median Q3 Max Outlier

6 PRACTICE : FIND THE RELATIVE DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS AND CRATE A TUKEY BOX PLOT FOR EACH OF THE FOLLOWING DATA SETS: 1. { 1, 6, 7, 10, 16, 16, 18, 22, 22, 26, 26 } 2. { 2, 3, 7, 8, 8, 8, 9, 9, 10, 11, 13 } 3. { 1, 9, 11, 13, 14, 15, 15, 16, 24, 30 } 4. { -3, 3, 8, 8, 13, 13, 19 } 5. { 1, 9, 10, 11, 13, 13, 23 }
