1 Kindergarten Art Project Northwood Elementary PTA Art Docent Program
Still Life Drawing Presentation modified and prepared by Alice Finch 2016 – modified by Northwood PTA 2/2017 Kindergarten Art Project Northwood Elementary PTA Art Docent Program

2 How this PowerPoint Works
Some of the slides in this presentation are hidden. (The slide number has a box and slash through it.) A hidden slide will not be shown in ‘slide show’ mode. It is visible and can be edited etc. in ‘normal’ mode. You can change modes on the view tab or with the icons in the lower right corner. Some of the slides have notes. These notes contain more detailed information that will be helpful in understanding the background of an artist or talking points for a slide. If you would like view or print this presentation with the notes, use the ‘notes page’ on the view tab or on the print menu.

3 Lesson Overview Grade: K Medium: Paper & chalk pastels Lesson: drawing
Time:60 minutes Volunteers: 3 Project Overview/Skills Students will draw a small collection of fruit using simple shapes and shading. Vocabulary Line, Shape, Balance, Proportion, Dimension

4 Still Life Drawing Materials Needed
Materials/Home Preparation Collection of miscellaneous objects for still life groupings- recommend setting these up ahead of time, 3 or 4 objects to a grouping – a basket, plate or bowl will work well too. Suggested items: simple shapes – I recommend sticking with fruit and vegetables that are simple in form but vary in size and shape. 3x5 Index cards-1 per student. Set up the grouping on this card. Make sure objects overlap in some way 9x12 White paper for final piece Chalk pastels Sharpie for outline Post-Lesson the Parent Letter for this lesson to your room parent (available on the PTA website under ”Art Docent Volunteer Resources”) and ask your room parent to forward it to the class. The letter gives the parents context for the lesson their student completed and this step helps ensure on-going support of the Northwood PTA Art Docent program!

5 Display Once the project is finished, student work should be mounted on colored paper and displayed either in the classroom or in the designated area in the hallway. If there are some who have not finished, please check with the teacher on how they would like to proceed. When artwork is sent home please print out the parent letter and put on back of each artwork.

Lets play a quick game : Look at the objects in front of you and take turns naming something you see. Talk about texture, detail, color and shadow.

13 Step 2 – Observe what is in front of you
Take the time to really see the shapes and sizes in front of you What are the objects made of? circles Rectangles Proportions- What is the biggest thing and what is the smallest Where do objects overlap? What are the shapes in between the objects?

14 Step 3 – Practice Drawing
On your index card, draw the simple shapes of your objects using pencil. Draw them BIG- fill the page Draw what you see. Make sure you draw the edge of the table! Use your eraser to make corrections. This is practice so try again if it isn’t quite right When you have a practice draft that fills the page, then move on to your final paper

15 Step 4 – Draw Still Life Move to your big paper.
