Vocabulary The Commutative Property states that the order in which numbers are added or multiplied does not change the sum or product. The Associative Property states that the way in which numbers are grouped when they are added or multiplied does not change the sum or product. A property is a statement that is true for any number. Additive Inverse-when 0 is added to any number, the sum is the number. Multiplicative Identity- when any number is multiplied by 1, the product is the number. Multiplicative Property of Zero- when any number is multiplied by 0, the product is 0.

Vocabulary Cont. A counterexample is a specific case which proves a statement is false; an example that shows that a conjecture is false, the property does not apply. The Distributive Property states that to multiply a sum or difference by a number, multiply each term inside the parenthesis by the number outside the parentheses. The expression 2(x=2) and 2x+4 are equivalent expressions. No matter what x is, these expressions have the same value.
