1 Careers in Engineering
Foundations of Engineering and Technology Careers in Engineering. Foundations of Engineering and Technology

2 Engineering… The branch of science and technology concerned with design, building, and use of engines, machines, and structures. “Science is about knowing; engineering is about doing.” -Henry Petroski Engineering is defined as the branch of science and technology concerned with design, building, and use of engines, machines and structures. Ash Henry Petroski says, “Science is about knowing, engineering is about doing.”

3 Disciplines of Engineering
Disciplines of Engineering are the specific areas that an engineer may practice in. There are several sub-categories under each of these disciplines. The next few slides will list some of those disciplines and what job they entail.

4 Make up for any missing assignment
Agenda Opening session Samples Work session Research pathways for engineering and technology Closing session What I discovered… Standards: STEM.6. Students will examine the nature of engineering & technology. MSENGR-EET-1.c - Investigate the pathways for engineering and technology Essential Question(s): What are the pathways for engineering and technology? Make up for any missing assignment (EverFi)

6 Engineering Pathway Project
Students will choose partners to complete this project. Then students will choose a profession within the engineering field. See included document “Engineering and Technology Jobs”. The pair will then spend 2-3 class days researching their given profession. Research must include, but is not limited to: Identifying the occupation. Identifying the daily tasks and responsibilities of the occupation. Where can you obtain a degree for this occupation within the state of Georgia? Outside of Georgia? What are the educational requirements for this job? What are some current job opportunities for this occupation? What is the average salary for this occupation? What resources or web sites were referenced for this activity? How can this career help to better the environment? *Students will get extra credit for finding and identifying unique components, traits, or experiences related to their profession research topic.

10 Educational Requirements
Engineers have to have high education requirements to go along with their high paychecks.

11 Education Bachelor’s Degree (4 years) May require a Master’s Degree
ABET – The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology Most engineers must obtain a bachelor’s degree or a four year degree from an accredited university. Some disciplines of engineering require a master’s or either a doctorate’s degree. If an engineer is going to be dealing with problems associated with the public then they need to become licensed through the ABET or the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

12 YOUR TURN TO TEACH! Begin Activity 15.1 – Professions Presentation
Now it is your turn to delve deeper and teach the class. You are to begin activity 15.1 – Professions Presentation. You and a partner are to research a specific engineering profession and create a presentation to show the class.
