1 Multiplication tables check
10th – 28th June 2019

2 What is the multiplication tables check?
The multiplication test is designed to help ensure children in primary school know their times tables up to 12 off by heart. As well as being critical for everyday life, knowledge of multiplication tables helps children to solve problems quickly and flexibly and allows them to tackle more complex mathematics later on in school. It is a voluntary check in 2018/19 but compulsory from 2019/20 onwards.

3 About the multiplication tables check
The new on-screen check will be delivered using a computer or a tablet. There will be 25 questions in total. 6 seconds will be allowed per question. It will test the children on all the multiplication tables up to 12x12. There is no pass mark and no child will fail the test. The DFE says the purpose of the check is to help teachers identify and target children who are falling behind.

4 Which tables will be included?

5 What will it look like?

6 How can you help your child?
Asking your child times tables questions out of order  such as ‘What’s 11x12? What’s 5x6?’ Using arrays to help your child memorise times tables. For example, using fun objects like Smarties or Lego bricks to make it more entertaining. Using apps (PurpleMash) and games to help build speed. Singing times tables songs (there are plenty online).
