15 Beaches Natural shore protection

16 Revetments Large, rough, angular rock (or rubble) on a slope 1.5 to 1 or less. Wave energy dissipates on the slope and on the rough surface. Some reflected wave energy, beach lakeward of stone is rare due to scour and changing water levels.

17 Seawalls Vertical structures at the water/land interface. Concrete block, cast-in-place concrete or steel sheet pile. High reflected wave energy, no beach. Easy access to the water.

Shore Structure Permit: To ensure that structures that act to control erosion, wave action or inundation along the Lake Erie shoreline are of sound coastal engineering design. ORC Temporary Shore Structure Permit: For emergency construction of new erosion control measures or repairs to existing unpermitted structures to safeguard life, health, or property. Projects that will control erosion, wave action or flooding (revetments, seawalls, piers, groins) Erosion control projects immediately necessary to safeguard life, health, or property (revetments, seawalls) Authorizes construction during a 2-year period and repairs for the life of the structure Temporary authorization (2 years); Shore Structure Permit required upon expiration Professional engineer required to design the project No professional engineer design required Reviewed for structural stability, long term functionality, impacts to sand resources & upland is owned by the applicant Reviewed to ensure construction materials are suitable and upland is owned by the applicant Issued within 3 – 6 months of application receipt Issued within 1 week to 2 weeks
