Tim ran up to his mom begging for another chance. “I know I messed up, mom. I promise that I will do better next time, please don’t ground me from my phone,” he pleaded. “You lied to me, you said you had your homework complete, and now I find out you are failing? Unacceptable!” She nearly screamed back. “It’s not my fault, Ms. Brown is so darn mean! She gives us hours each night. I couldn’t keep up if I wanted to” he responded hotly. “First of all, that is a hyperbole. Second of all, it’s always someone else’s fault, isn’t it. Ms. Brown is NOT to blame. You chose this for yourself. I am not just grounding you from your phone; I am cancelling the line. You will no longer have any access to technology or your phone until this behavior changes—end of discussion.” How does the author feel about kids don’t do their homework? You had better cancel all of your plans—if you don’t fix this, you’re fired!” “I will sir. I will skip my mother’s funeral, and the birth of my first child. I will work until dawn each day if I need to. Thank you for the opportunity to fix this sir” Jenson said pathetically. He knew this meant that his family would likely not speak to him again, but how could he stand up to his boss? He was just too weak. He walked back to his desk with his head down, shoulders bent, defeated. What is the author’s tone? What does he do to our main character? What tone words helped you to determine this tone?

You had better cancel all of your plans—if you don’t fix this, you’re fired!” “I don’t appreciate how you treat me. Because of this I have already applied and accepted a new position at a better company. I quit.” Jenson’s boss stood there a long while, mouth wide open in surprise.
