The length of each box represents the interquartile range, defined as the distance between the 25th and the 75th percentiles. The three horizontal lines running through the box represent the median (middle line) and the upper and lower bounds of the 95% confidence interval around the median (median ± 1.58 × the quartile range.) The length of the whiskers above each box depicts 1.5 times the interquartile distance and the length of the whiskers below each box represents the interquartile distance times 1.5 as measured down from the top of the box. Outside values are defined as those data points that are 1.5 to 3.0 times the interquartile distance, while far outside values are defined as those that exceed three times the interquartile distance.
