3 II. West Daniel Boone Western Pioneer
Explored the Appalachian Mtns. = The Cumberland Gap = Kentucky Marked the Wilderness Road 100,000+ people between 1775 & 1790

4 Roadways Private companies built turnpikes (toll roads)
Tolls paid by travelers Crushed Stone “corduroy roads” = logs

5 Rivers More comfortable Could carry more Drawbacks:
Eastern Region = flowed north-south direction, most goods headed east-west Downstream was easy, upstream = low current

6 1780s-1790s = steam boats Cargo & passengers 1807, Robert Fulton launched the Clermont Loud, quicker, smooth, cheaper River Cities = Cincinnati & St. Louis

7 The Erie Canal An artificial waterway, connect the Hudson River to Lake Erie Locks = compartments to raise or lower the water level = like an escalator for boats Opened October 26, 1825
