Brotherly Love

Introduction The Greek word philadelphia, derived from philadelphos [loving one’s brother], signifies “the love of brothers, brotherly love” [Thomas 5360]. BDAG say it refers to “love of [a] brother/sister (elsewhere in the literature sense of love for blood brothers or sisters, in our literature in the transferred sense of affection for a fellow-Christian.” This word occurs 6x in the NT (Rom. 12:10; 1 Thess. 4:9; Heb. 13:1; 1 Pet. 1:22; 2 Pet. 1:7 [2x]).
