2nd April 2019 Parent Information Meeting: Phonics Screening Thankfulness – Trust – Honesty – Friendship – Love – Peace – Forgiveness Respect – Courage

What is phonics? Children are taught to read by breaking down words into separate sounds or ‘phonemes’. They are then taught how to blend these sounds together to read the whole word. Children have a 20 minute phonics lesson each day and they are encouraged to use these strategies to read and write in other lessons. There are around 40 different sounds. KS1 Phonics Screening Check
The Year 1 phonics screening check is a way for teachers to ensure that children are making sufficient progress with their phonics skills to read words and that they are on track to become fluent readers who can enjoy reading for pleasure and for learning. Thankfulness – Trust – Honesty – Friendship – Love – Peace – Forgiveness Respect – Courage
9
What is the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check?
The phonics screening check will be taken individually by all children in Year 1. This has taken place in England since June It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how your child is progressing in phonics. It will help to identify whether your child needs additional support at this stage so that they do not fall behind in this vital early reading skill. Thankfulness – Trust – Honesty – Friendship – Love – Peace – Forgiveness Respect – Courage
10
How is the Phonics Screening Check completed?
There will be two sections in this 40-word check and it will assess phonics skills and knowledge learned through Reception and Year 1. Mrs Towriess (EYFS and KS1 Leader) will administrate the phonics screening for all Year 1 children. Thankfulness – Trust – Honesty – Friendship – Love – Peace – Forgiveness Respect – Courage
11
What will it check? It will check that your child can:
Sound out and blend graphemes in order to read simple words. Read phonically decodable one-syllable and two-syllable words, e.g. cat, sand, windmill. Read a selection of nonsense words which are referred to as pseudo words. Thankfulness – Trust – Honesty – Friendship – Love – Peace – Forgiveness Respect – Courage
12
What are nonsense, pseudo or alien words and why are they included?
These are words that are phonically decodable but are not actual words with an associated meaning e.g. brip, snorb. Pseudo words are included in the check specifically to assess whether your child can decode a word using phonics skills and not their memory. The pseudo words will be shown to your child with a picture of a monster/alien. Refer parents to the 2018 phonics screening example. Point out saucers and twice – alternative pronunciations. Remind parents that some children try to make sense of alien words so will change it into a familiar word. Thankfulness – Trust – Honesty – Friendship – Love – Peace – Forgiveness Respect – Courage
13
Is there a pass mark? Currently, the pass mark for the past few years has been 32 out of 40. However, if children do not reach the required standard, then your child will retake the phonics screening in Year 2. Thankfulness – Trust – Honesty – Friendship – Love – Peace – Forgiveness Respect – Courage
14
When will the screening
take place? The screening will take place throughout a week in June. The children cannot retake the test at any other time so it is very important your child is in school during this week. Reassure parents that this will be a normal school week and children will be calm and relaxed. Thankfulness – Trust – Honesty – Friendship – Love – Peace – Forgiveness Respect – Courage

How can I help? Digraph- 2 letters making one sound = cow
Trigraphs- 3 letters making one sound = night Split digraphs- 2 vowels with a consonant inbetween. Used to be known as the magic e! spine - i_e Encourage your child to ‘sound out’ when reading or writing. Focusing particularly on spotting more unusual sound patterns. Tell parents that we use this ‘spotting’ strategy in school. Can you spot any digraphs, trigraphs, split digraphs in a word? When using this vocabulary, refer parents to sound mats on tables to spot these digraphs, trigraphs and split digraphs.
16
How can I help? Encourage your child to use their sound mat when writing and use their actions to find the sound they need. Use ‘ ZAT PHONICS SOUND MAT ‘ for free to hear the phonics sounds back. Thankfulness – Trust – Honesty – Friendship – Love – Peace – Forgiveness Respect – Courage
