1 Oppy Regional /12/2018

2 Points of Sailing

3 The 5 Essentials Sail Setting – ensure sail is always set correctly
Balance – Sailing the boat upright, kiting downwind Trim – front and back balace or ‘pitch’ of the boat- where our body weight is Daggerboard – adjusted correctly for the point of sail and weather Course – sailing the shortest, quickest correct route around the course

4 Windward Mark Rounding

5 Leeward Mark Rounding

6 Tacking Look over front shoulder to check it is clear
Push the ‘tack button’ and push tiller over half way (Boat heads up and front/luff of the sail flaps) Superman Back foot across Duck under boom and cross boat Sit down Straighten the tiller behind our back before swapping hands, sheet sail in if required and get sailing Swap hands thumb to bum with our knuckles on the top of the tiller extension

7 Gybing Ensure we are sailing downwind first with our sail out at 90 degrees to the boat and centre board up Look under the sail to check it is clear Sheet in 2-3 handfuls Tiller towards you half way Stand up with our back foot over the centreline of the boat Pull falls of mainsheet to initiate the gybe Duck Sit down and straighten the tiller so we are still pointing downwind Swap hands thumb to bum

8 Rigging Mast ties -1.5-2mm diameter twice round the mast
Boom ties mm diameter once round the boom Sail ties gap between the spar (mast and boom) and edge of the sail is to be a maximum of 10mm 3mm thicker ties for the corners of the sail, end of boom and top of the mast

9 Depowering the boat How can we depower the sail and boat when it is windy? Sprit – ease the sprit to depower the top corner of the sail Kicker – as much as possible to hold the boom down making sheeting in and out easier too! Outhaul – pull tight to flatten the bottom of the sail along the boom making it less powerful Centreboard- lift centreboard up 10-15cm upwind, lift centreboard up on reaches and runs to help prevent nosediving

10 Homework We are not meeting until February now so you need to go out sailing lots in between now and then Boat Maintenance Does anything need replacing on my boat? Ie. Frayed or worn kicker, sprit, outhaul or sail ties Do I have spare sail ties? Do I have two bailers one for each side of the boat Windward and leeward mark rounding Use the diagrams above for windward and leeward mark rounds and break down each movement, use the numbers as a template

11 Homework 2 The previous picture is a surface pressure chart. what does it show? What way does the wind go round the H and L? What are the blue, red and pink shapes? What do they represent? Which direction will the wind be in the UK-North Wales? How windy will it be approximately? If you don’t know try asking others at your sailing club, parents or look online
