8. Black Holes
In 2019, audiences around the world were captivated by the release of the very first image of a black hole.
This extraordinary feat was accomplished by 29-year-old computer scientist Dr. Katie Bouman.
Three years ago, she led the development of an algorithm to facilitate capturing of the image.
Located in the M87 galaxy, the black hole cannot be seen by the naked eye and is three million times the size of the Earth.
It was scanned over the course of 10 days by the Event Horizon Telescope, which consists of eight linked telescopes across the world.
The algorithms, which are a set of rules used to solve problems, converted telescopic data into the photo we see today.
