1 AGENDA FOCUS: What are AWUBS and how can I use them in my own writing?
*AWUBS Grammar *AWUBS Write *Closing: I Learned… *HW: AWUBS packet due Wednesday (if you didn’t finish it in class). Ch. 3 due Thursday. Quiz.

2 CAT BIN LADY Important Dates Important Names
We will read about the “cat bin lady.” As I read it aloud, circle/highlight: Important Dates Important Names What the huge “debate” is…

3 DISCUSSION Clip Interview your classmate and get a reaction…
Clip Interview your classmate and get a reaction… Do you think what the woman did qualifies as animal abuse? Do you think she should be formally charged?

4 WHAT ARE WE NOTICING? When I was reading this, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the cat. Since the cat could have been crushed by the garbage pick-up, Mary Bale should face some type of penalty for her actions. Although the video was funny, it was still a cruel prank to play. There is a comma in each sentence! The first word makes the sentence need a comma. It is an AWUBS word! The first part of the sentence is incomplete, it can’t stand on its own.

5 WHAT ARE SOME GRAMMAR RULES?
When I was reading this, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the cat. Since the cat could have been crushed by the garbage pick-up, Mary Bale should face some type of penalty for her actions. Although the video was funny, it was still a cruel prank to play. Brainstorm as a group first, then we will share as a class… In order to recreate these sentences, what will you have to do?

6 INDEPENDENT/DEPENDENT CLAUSE
What is an independent clause? It’s a fancy way to say a “complete sentence.” The sentence makes sense, has a complete thought, etc. What is a dependent clause? It’s a fancy way to say a “incomplete sentences.” The sentence is not finished, doesn’t make sense, or doesn’t have a complete thought. Fill in the boxes.

7 ARTICLE Which sentences are independent clauses? Label them “IC” in the box. She wasn’t thinking. The cat was in the trash can. Which sentences need to be fixed because they are dependent clauses? Label the “DC” in the box and fix them by adding on with a comma! Before a person acts. Although I think it was wrong. Because she did what she did.

8 AAAWWWUBBIS GRAMMAR NOTES—copy what shows up on the powerpoint…

9 AAAWWWUBBIS WORDS Although After As long as Whenever While When
Until/Unless Because Before If Since They are words that… 1. Start off a dependent clause (meaning its incomplete, it needs more information) 2. They can introduce an idea or add more information to a sentence 3. They need a comma.

10 Examples When I went to the store.
Dependent, needs more information. When I went to the store, I bought milk. Use comma! AAAWWWUBBIS are a good thing because it makes sentences more complex. You should use AWUBS in your own writing to make your sentence longer and to add style to your writing.

11 Make your own—on Notes page
Create two AWUBS sentences yourself…remember the commas and make sure they are complete and make sense! Get up and share your sentences with a classmate and get their initials! Class share—can a couple students share the sentences they created?

12 AAAWWWUBBIS PHRASE vs. AWUBS SENTENCE.
So what is an AWUBS phrase? It’s the phrase that starts off with an AAAWWWUBBIS word and ends where the comma appears. Ex: When I went home, --this is the AWUBS phrase. The trick is to find the “natural pause,” then add the comma. So what is an AWUBS sentence? This is the whole complete sentence including the AWUBS phrase. Ex: When I went home, I ate my dinner. –this is an AWUBS sentence.

13 Your TURN—APPLY IT! Paragraph: Write your own reaction to this article and… 1. Use at least 3 AWUBS sentences to score a “B.” If you want a perfect score, you should have 4 AWUBS sentences. 2. Don’t use them back-to-back, space them out instead! 2. Highlight them. 3. Avoid “I statements!” Reflection: What are the AAAWWWUBBIS rules or how do they work? You can do a bulleted list of 3-4 things. REVIEW THE RUBRIC FOR SCORING!
