1 Wrt 105: practices of academic writing
Dr. Rusty Bartels Friday, August 31st, 2018 Week 1, Day 3

2 Overview Finish “What’s Literacy” Conversations Freewrite
Begin SRTOL Discussion Small Groups Language & Power in SRTOL Whole Class Pairs SRTOL – making connections Wrap-up

3 Reading – Key Terms 6 Small Groups Each group will: Define the term
Use an example not included in the text to discuss the term Present their information to the whole class Group 1: Purpose Group 2: Audience Group 3: Persona Group 4: Medium Group 5: Genre Group 6: Context

4 Freewrite What have you been taught over the years about the rules and/or usages of spoken and/or written English? Note some examples of what your English class experience has been like up until now – try to recall specifics. Share with a neighbor or two. Ask for at least 3 students to share

5 SRTOL As we begin thinking about, discussing, and sharing these experiences you just reflected on, how do you begin to put them in conversation with the reading?

6 SRTOL Small Groups of 2 – 4 Using the terms we were introduced to by our first reading, apply them to an analysis of today’s reading. For Example: What is the purpose of this text? Terms: PURPOSE AUDIENCE PERSONA MEDIUM GENRE CONTEXT

7 Language & Power in SRTOL
Freewrite: Identify and reflect on at least one portion of the reading that stood out to you as it pertains to the relationship between language and power. Whole Class: Each person will share a brief response. Reflection: Either with a neighbor or in a freewrite, reflect on the connections you see across your peers’ observations, and your own thoughts and responses to them.

8 SRTOL – Making Connections
From my perspective: SRTOL informs my approach to teaching and evaluating writing My goal is to support you in conveying meaning, and developing understanding in your audience My aims for you all: Use this conversation to reflect on your own experiences and assumptions around language Both for yourself, but also how you respond to others and their language usage

9 SRTOL – Making Connections
Take Away Points Language is fluid and always changing Grammar & dictionaries describe how language operates rather than prescribes how it should As long as the intended meaning is conveyed, language is about usage rather than accuracy Language reinforces and reproduces systems of power based on the assumptions we make about the user of particular languages, dialects, and accents

10 Wrap-up Today we: Finished “What’s Literacy” Terms
Discussed SRTOL; started applying literacy terms; considered relationship between language and power Next time: No Class Monday Reading Response 1 DUE by the beginning of class Wednesday, Sept. 5th Next reading: Anzaldúa Next class: Literacy & Identity
