All must be able to recall what Operation Barbarossa was and identify a few reasons for it’s failure (L3c-4b) Most should be able to describe German strengths and weaknesses that led to the Russian victory (4a-5a) Some could explain why Operation Barbarossa failed and why the failure was significant (6c+)

Operation Barbarossa Operation Barbarossa was the name given to Nazi Germany’s invasion of Russia on June 22nd 1941. Barbarossa the largest military attack of World War 2 The Germans and their allies used 3 million soldiers, 3580 tanks, 7184 artillery guns, 1830 planes and 750,000 horses. The German army’s advance had been so fast that its supply and communication lines failed to keep up. In November 1942 the Red Army launched a counter-attack at Stalingrad, gradually surrounding a German force of 300,000 soldiers, and cut it off from its supply chain Throughout the winter, many more German soldiers froze and starved to death. The remaining 90,000 Germans eventually surrendered in January 1943.
