Enfeoffment: Land gifted in exchange for a pledge of service Hidage: Medieval unit of area Marcher lands: Lands bordering the hostile Scottish and Welsh frontiers Palatines: Shires with independent powers of taxation and the raising of armies – Lancashire, Cheshire and Durham Shires: Province within England with its own government (Anglo-Saxon origin) Sub-tenants: Smaller scale tenants who rented their land though oaths of fealty to tenants-in-chief e.g. knights Suzreignty: The overlordship of land and its vassals Tenant-in-chief: Large scale tenants who made their oath of fealty direct to the king e.g. nobility Tenure: The holding of land Vassal: One who has sworn an oath of fealty to an individual.
