1 THE JULIO-CLAUDIAN DYNASTY

2 The Julio-Claudian dynasty gets its name from the fact that they all come from the families Julii and Claudii. Octavian Agustus was the great grandson son of C. Julius Caesar who was the father of the famous C. Julius Caesar. He was also connected to the Julii by his adoption by the famous Julius Caesar, his grand uncle. His adopted son Tiberius was the born son of Tiberius Claudius Nero.

3 Son of C. Octavius, adopted by C. Julius Caesar (his granduncle)
AUGUSTUS 27 B.C. – A.D. 14 Son of C. Octavius, adopted by C. Julius Caesar (his granduncle)

4 Tiberius 14-37 CE Son of Tiberius Claudius Nero, adopted by Caesar Octavian Augustus (his stepdad)

5 Gaius Caesar (Caligula) 37-41 CE
Great grandson of Augustus and Ti. Claudius Nero Adopted by Tiberius (his grandfather)

6 Grandson of Ti. Claudius Nero
41-54 CE Grandson of Ti. Claudius Nero Not adopted, but named Princeps by the Praetorian Guard upon the death of Caligula

7 Nero 54-68 CE Great-great grandson of Augustus, great-great grandson of Ti. Claudius Nero, adopted by Claudius (his granduncle)

8 The Year of 4 Emperors Galba was reportedly voted Emperor by the senate while Nero was still living. Upon being confronted by the Praetorian guard Nero is said to have killed himself. Galba had marched on Rome from his governorship in Spain. Servius Sulpicius Galba – 8 June 68 to 15 January 69

9 The Year of 4 Emperors Galba’s six months in office and his refusal to pay bribes to key military leaders won him a lot of unpopularity. Trouble began when troops in Germania Superior and Inferior revolted and named their general Vitellius their emperor. Galba received no support from his own praetorian guard as the Rhine troops began moving south. Galba was murdered, and his former supporter Otho, governor of Lusitania, took his place. Marcus Salvius Otho – 15 January 69 to 16 April 69

10 The Year of 4 Emperors When Otho had taken power in Rome, he immediately found out that Vitellius was on his way with an army. He first tried to share power with Vitellius, who refused, and then immediately prepared for war. Shortly into the war and with a strong army behind him Otho chose to kill himself rather than draw out another civil war. It was said that some of his troops were inspired to leap into his funeral pyre. Vitellius took power but was never actually recognized as the Emperor by the entire empire. Aulus Vitellius Germanicus – 17 April 69 to 22 December 69

11 The Year of 4 Emperors Vitellius was doomed almost from the beginning. Vespasian left the Siege of Jerusalem in the charge of his oldest son Titus and marched to Rome where he demanded the resignation of Vitellius. Vitellius was taken from hiding, murdered and thrown in the Tiber. Titus Flavius Vespasianus – 1 July 69 to 23 June 79
